{"id":1147,"date":"2016-10-10T17:15:19","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T16:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/discover.pjb.co.uk\/?p=1147"},"modified":"2016-10-13T09:11:31","modified_gmt":"2016-10-13T08:11:31","slug":"fixing-link-importance-good-walking-routes-stations-town-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/discover.pjb.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/10\/10\/fixing-link-importance-good-walking-routes-stations-town-centres\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing the Link &#8211; importance of good walking routes from stations to town centres"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-field-standfirst field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>In 2013 the <span style=\"color: #2cb249;\"><a style=\"color: #2cb249;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bettertransport.org.uk\/\">&#8220;Campaign for Better Transport&#8221;<\/a><\/span> undertook some research, funded by <span style=\"color: #2cb249;\"><a style=\"color: #2cb249;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abelliogreateranglia.co.uk\/about-us\/company-information\">Abellio<\/a><\/span> about the importance of good walking routes from stations to town centres and how they could be improved using the &#8216;Fixing the Link&#8217; methodology pioneered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ns.nl\/en\"><span style=\"color: #2cb249;\">Dutch Railways<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1153\" src=\"http:\/\/discover.pjb.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/fixing-the-link-methodolgy.png\" alt=\"fixing-the-link-methodolgy\" width=\"425\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"http:\/\/discover.pjb.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/fixing-the-link-methodolgy.png 425w, http:\/\/discover.pjb.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/fixing-the-link-methodolgy-228x300.png 228w, http:\/\/discover.pjb.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/fixing-the-link-methodolgy-300x395.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<h2><span style=\"color: #2cb249;\">The\u00a0research<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The &#8220;Fixing the Link&#8221; methodology assesses the route between a station and town centre on the basis of four criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2cb249;\">Liveliness:<\/span> A lively scene is one with people on the street, attracted by a variety of uses and places to sit down and watch<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2cb249;\">Human scale:<\/span> A physical setting that matches human scale and walking speed<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2cb249;\">Legibiliy:<\/span> The ease with which people can orientate themselves and see the route into town<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2cb249;\">Safety &amp; comfort:<\/span> Pedestrians must have priority and the route should feel safe, protected from traffic, well maintained and overseen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three towns in England (Colchester, Ely and Ipswich) were scored using these criteria and compared to similar towns in the Netherlands. The Dutch cities scored much better across the board, with English railway stations being generally located much further outside town centres and pedestrians having a low priority compared to other traffic. The research identifies some of the causes of the low scores and makes suggestions for how things could be improved.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bettertransport.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/research-files\/13.11.04.fixing-the-link.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #2cb249;\">Full Report<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #2cb249;\">Comment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Is this methodology being applied to other towns and cities in the UK?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a variation on this &#8220;Fixing the Link&#8221; methodology could be adapted for rural railway stations to increase access opportunities for increasing visitor numbers to rural attractions without cars?
